Bede Chair Outreach Activities

On 10 February of this year, to celebrate the Year of Priesthood, Prof. Lewis Ayres, the inaugural holder of the Bede Chair in Catholic Theology, in tandem with Prof. Mark MacIntosh, the Van Mildert Canon Professor of Divinity, will be putting on an ecumenically-minded day for clergy both of the Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, and of the Anglican Diocese of Durham on theology of priesthood today.

The event is one in a long line of outreach activities Prof. Ayres has been engaged in since joining the Centre last year, including the “Bishop Dunn Memorial Lecture: Trinity in the Life of the Church”, St Cuthbert’s Church, Durham, on the 1 June 2009.

Further to that, Prof. Ayres has contributed a series of three public talks for the Diocesan Education Service, Newcastle, on the theology of Benedict XVI (8 Oct, 5 Nov, 3 Dec).  In November 2009 a further two seminars were held on the “The Trinity and Christian life” at All Saints Catholic Church, Lanchester (19 & 26 Nov), and on the 2 December, Prof Ayres contributed to the RCIA session for St. Cuthbert’s, Durham, on “The Trinity”.  This July Prof. Ayres will be
speaking at the Diocesan Deacons’ Annual Retreat.
