31st March 20102nd Annual Bishop Dunn Memorial Lecture

Dunn Memorial Lecture 2010

Upon hearing of the sad and untimely death of Bishop Kevin Dunn (RIP) in March 2008, at the suggestion of the Centre for Catholic Studies and in partnership with the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, Durham University immediately announced its intention to establish an annualMemorial Lecture.  This annual event marks the decisive support and personal patronage that Bishop Dunn had given to the development of the Centre for Catholic Studies and the associated establishment of the Bede Chair – the first endowed Chair of Catholic Theology in the UK since the Reformation.  The Memorial Lecture, which is held in St Cuthbert’s Church/the Catholic Chaplaincy Durham, is a tribute to this lasting legacy.  The purpose is to serve and nurture theological education and ecclesial formation throughout the North by bringing the best of contemporary theology into conversation with the life of the contemporary church.  In May 2009, Professor Lewis Ayres, the first Bede Chair of Catholic Theology, presented the inaugural Bishop Dunn Memorial Lecture on the theme ‘The Trinity and the Life of the Church.
Professor Paul D. Murray, Director of the Centre for Catholics Studies at Durham University, will give this year’s lecture on the subject, ‘The Case for Catholic Theology in the UK Public Academy: An Opportunity for All.’  The lecture will be held on Wednesday 5th May, at 7:00 pm at St. Cuthbert’s Church.  The lecture is free, but reservations are required due to limited space.  Additionally, there is an optional ticketed reception after the lecture at the cost of £5.00 per person.  To reserve a place at the lecture and/or reception please contact Mr Gerald Boersma at the address below.  Please indicate whether you wish to attend the reception also and enclose a cheque accordingly, payable to: “Durham University – Centre for Catholic Studies.”

Wings of Desire (15)
Winner of the Best Director prize at Cannes, Wings of Desire is both a love-letter to the German capital and a rumination on human existence, and remains one of the most vital films ever made. Bruno Ganz is Damiel, an angel perched atop buildings high over Berlin who can hear the thoughts – fears, hopes, dreams – of all the people living below. He finds himself entranced by a trapeze artist whose eloquent expression of her doubts and fears makes him yearn for a life where he can feel happiness and love.
