LOVE WATCHES OVER JUSTICE
Monday 26th October, there will be a chance to hear Dr Terry Veling speak on
THE BEATITUDE OF MERCY: LOVE WATCHES OVER JUSTICE
Wallis Room (St John’s College)
5.30-6.30pm
This lecture is a meditative exploration of the relationship between justice and mercy. While it recognises the importance of social justice – as a mutual indebtedness – it argues that without social mercy, even justice itself cannot save us. Mercy is not the opposite or complement of justice, but its very condition.
(Image Notes: Located on the campus of Samford University, USA. “Seek wisdom to temper justice with compassion”. The concept is that the Angel of Mercy is seen encouraging the Lady of Justice. She is staying the sword of justice to keep it from being used too swiftly, tempering it with compassion. The sculptor is Glynn Acree. )
Dr Terry A.Veling is head of the School of Theology for the McAuley Campus of the Australian Catholic University in Brisbane, and the author of Living in the Margins and Practical Theology: “On Earth as It Is in Heaven.”
