This volume proposes a fresh strategy for ecumenical engagement – ‘Receptive Ecumenism’ – that is fitted to the challenges of the contemporary context and has already been internationally recognised as making a distinctive and important new contribution to ecumenical thought and practice. Beyond this, the volume tests and illustrates this proposal by examining what Roman Catholicism in particular might fruitfully learn from its ecumenical others.

The evening of Thursday 8th May, 2007, saw the formal opening of the Durham Centre for Catholic Studies and the Bede Chair of Catholic Theology. The event marked the beginning of a short international conference, 8- 10th May, on the theme ‘Catholic Theology and the Public Academy’. The whole event will included free public lectures by Prof. David Ford, University of Cambridge, and Fenwick Lawson, Associate of the Royal College of Art; celebratory dinners in St Chad’s College and the Cathedral Undercroft; and other apeakers including: Tina Beattie, Gavin D’Costa, Eamon Duffy, David Ford, Paul Griffiths, Karen Kilby, Michael Kirwan, S.J., Paul Lakeland, Nicholas Lash, Gerard Loughlin, Andrew Louth, John Milbank, Francesca Murphy, Paul D Murray, Peter Phillips, Marcus Pound.
